The building principal is the educational leader of his school. He reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools.  The building principal is in charge of all the details of the daily operation of the school building.  He works closely with staff to ensure that the school is an attractive, pleasant and productive place in which students can work and learn.   

The responsibilities of the building principal are many and varied.  Some of those responsibilities are:

 Supervision:

 ·        Of all staff, other resources and service personnel attached to the school

 Collaboration with the Administrative Team: 

bulletKeeps the Superintendent informed on issues, needs and operations of the school.
bulletParticipates actively as a member of the administrative team.

 Community Relationships: 

bulletParticipates in community and school functions.
bulletInvolves the community and parents in the school activities.
bulletFosters positive interpersonal relationships among students, staff and community.
bulletMaintains a professional working relationship with the PTA.

 Staff Management, Leadership and Evaluation: 

bulletSelects and recommends personnel as needed.
bulletEvaluates the schools’ professional and non-professional personnel in the attainment of their duties.
bulletEncourages the professional growth of faculty members in terms of district goals and objectives.
bulletImplements Board policies efficiently and effectively with staff members.

 Curriculum and Student Learning: 

The building principal works with the Curriculum Coordinator to: 

bulletCoordinate a program of curriculum articulation between grade levels.
bulletImplement an on-going system of curriculum and program evaluation.
bulletDevelop methods to properly evaluate student learning and progress towards stated educational objectives.
bulletInvolve the faculty and others in the decision making process.
bulletDesign and implement a school schedule most conducive to student learning and stated educational objectives.
bulletInsure implementation of the District Management Plan.

Student Management and Affective Development: 

bulletCreates an atmosphere conducive to learning.
bulletProvides for the needs of students.
bulletExhibits and models a genuine concern for all children.
bulletCreates a safe environment for both students and staff.
bulletWorks closely with staff to promote a positive climate for students in the school.

 Buildings and Grounds: 

bulletSees that the building, grounds and other equipment are maintained.
bulletDevelops short and long term plans for improving the facility.
bulletClosely supervises the buildings’ head custodian and coordinates building maintenance and cleaning needs with the custodial team.

 Business and Finance: 

bulletSubmits budgets that are comprehensive and realistic for the building.
bulletSubmits purchase orders for supplies, equipment, textbooks, etc.

 Professional Growth: 

bulletParticipates in professional organizations.
bulletContinues to update skills through workshops and/or conferences, and advanced education.
