Questions About the 2008-2009 Budget
|
What are people voting on this year? |
On April 15, Lebanon Township voters will elect three Board of Education members and vote on the base budget for the 2008-2009 school year. The base budget supports funding for the district’s current programs. The base budget also includes funding for an additional first grade teacher. This teacher is needed due to increases in enrollment in the present Kindergarten class.

Last year there was a need to support a separate question for sports, other activities and personnel positions. Are these items included in the base budget for next year? |
Next year’s proposed budget includes funding for all the programs in this year’s budget, without the need for a separate question. This was accomplished due to the passing of the separate question last year.
|
Why do we need to worry about voting? |
Low voter turnout could result in a budget defeat. A budget defeat may jeopardize the items approved by last year’s second question. Failure to approve the budget might result in cuts to the base budget and restrict future programs. A defeated budget may signal the Township Committee that the few discretionary items, such as extracurricular activities, should be eliminated.

Lebanon Township received additional state aid for next year. How was that money used? |
The district was fortunate to receive an increase in state aid for next year. This increase enabled the funding of programs with a minimal increase in property taxes. The majority of the increase received went directly to offset property tax increases.

I’d like information about specific expenses in the proposed budget. Where can I get that information? |
